On October 26, 2020 the amended Fertilizers Regulations, came into force. Modernization of the
Fertilizers Regulations was a multi year initiative by Canadian Food Inspection Agency Fertilizer Safety
Section staff, which included multiple consultations with fertilizer industry groups. The industry was
given a three year transition period (until October 26, 2023) during which they can choose to comply
with either the “current” or the “former” regulations. Once they have chosen, companies are not
permitted to switch between the two versions.
Additional information on the regulatory requirements during the transitional period and afterwards can
be found on the CFIA website.
The consultation process included the presentation of a series of four webinars in early 2021 which were
attended by over 100 participants in each case. The webinars focussed on regulatory changes made in
the new regulations. Each webinar concluded with a question-and-answer session during which senior
Fertilizer Safety Section staff provided verbal, as well as written responses. The webinars, which were
very well received by all attendees, included:
- Regulation of Products that are or contain Polymers (January 14)
- Exemptions under the Fertilizer Regulations (January 21)
- Safety Standards (January 28)
- Labelling & Record Keeping (February 4th )
A fifth webinar -Biosolids Regulation was presented to Canadian Water & Wastewater Association
members on February 10th
Copies of the presentation materials provided at the five webinars, in both official languages, and the
respective questions and answers, are listed below:
